Collection of Little Golden Books

Ever since childhood, Little Golden Books have been a favourite with me. I loved "The Taxi that hurried", "Scuffy the Tugboat" and "The little red caboose", but my alltime bestest Golden Book Story was "Goodbye Tonsils". I think I particularly liked that when MaryAnne went to hospital to have her tonsils out she was pampered and doted on, and grandma bought her a big pink teddy bear!! And MaryAnne was so adorable with her little brunette bobbed haircut, I wanted to look just like her !!!

Now that I have children of my own, collecting Little Golden Books has become a bit of a passion for me. How I adore the darling pictures, particularly if pre 1970's Golden Books. Artists such as Tibor Gergely, Mel Crawford, and Elenor Dart made the charming stories come to life so beautifully.

Here are just a few of my favourites out of my collection. I would love to hear if you grew up with Little Golden Books, and particularly what your favourite stories were....everyone has their favourite I am sure !

This is me with my favourite 'Goodbye Tonsils' which I found, to my great delight, at the Sydney Vintage Fair 2008 !

  1. My favourites are The Velveteen Rabbit (http://cdn3.ioffer.com/img/item/157/397/393/6wNHr4JpjpFAQMp.jpg), The Pokey Little Puppy (http://children.cheaperbooks.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/0307021343.jpg) and The Shy Little Kitten (http://ny-image2.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.159175202.jpg). Sadly my collection of Golden Books was put in a cardboard box in the garage and suffered water damage so the pages are stuck together on a lot of them.

Mrs Cleaver, I do have the Colour Kittens and my boys just adore it....I must have missed it when photographing some of my collection (it was probably under someones bed !!!) Stacy, I used to love my Grandma's 1950's copy of Disneys Cinderella...perfectly dreamy!Must hunt up a copy of that for myself.... Erin, my middle son adores the little red caboose too....I think he can really identify with the red caboose as he is a middle child and (Unfortunatly) is sometimes overlooked by the demands of my other two..... Tanyaa, I have never ever heard of The Velveteen Rabbit, and am so intrigued...will be checking it out for sure !!

Love to you all girls !! XX

  6. They ARE lovely, aren't they? I still have the ones that I had as a child (some, unfortunately, I drew on =\) - my favourite was The Elves and the Shoemaker. It's such a lovely story.

  7. My favourite Golden Book is still my favourite, almost 60 years on! "MISTER DOG, THE DOG WHO BELONGED TO HIMSELF". The illustrations by Garth Williams are magical and I think I can thank him for kick-starting my imagination! I still have my original (now coverless)copy my children enjoyed it when they were small. I was delighted to find new copies in a supermarket about 4 years ago so I bought two, giving one to my only grandchild and keeping one for the next.

I also loved "THE TRAIN TO TIMBUCTOO" and still have my copy minus its cover. It was my favourite bedtime story and my Mum couldn't get away with skipping over sentences because I knew it all by heart!

  8. I love golden books, and others like Whitman and Tell-a-Tale books, As for Favorites, A Day At The Zoo, I Love Grandpa, Ginny Paper Dolls, Rackety Boom, and many more. I don't remember the name but there was one that starts, Karen Kay is 4 today...I am a twin and my sister was Kay so I think that is why I liked this one. I remember Mom and Dad took turns reading us stories before bedtime, Mom would usually fall asleep reading! I have been collecting these for about 15 years and now find I have to be very selective as I am running out of room!
